China Live – San Francisco
San Francisco has the highest percentage of residents of Chinese descent of any city in the US so customers here are picky when it comes to food of the region. But none of this concerns George Chen, the co-owner and impresario behind San Francisco’s vast new China Live emporium; a $24M restaurant and food market on the fringes of Chinatown.
Chen’s own up-market restaurant (Eight Tables) won’t open until autumn, but the 120 seat, 500 cover-a-day Market Hall is already alive with the smell of bao, braised-beef-noodle soup and Peking-style duck. A number of other concessions, including a 25-seat Oolong Cafe, round off this ambitious project. Designer AvroKO has given the market hall a clean, modern look that’s very different to the clutter of the restaurants in Chinatown. The perfectly judged food is chiming well with the city’s high expectations. – Peter Weltman, Monocle Magazine
